CHAPTER ELEVEN
SOPHIE SEEMED TO be blooming. She had studied Henry Chancellorâs recommendations carefully, and with Drewâs help she was sticking to them. Her confidence seemed to grow by the day, and she became more relaxed and a delight to be with on set.
And then, unexpectedly, they both had a day off. This time it was Toddâs scenes, not Sophieâs, that needed to be reshot, and neither Drew nor Sophie were needed. He expected that sheâd take the opportunity to have a lie-in and a lazy day.
Instead, she appeared at breakfast looking like a million dollars. A little make-up, skilfully applied to make it look as if she was bare-faced. A pretty top, swirls of green and blue, with a matching necklace.
âWhat are you up to today?â She plumped herself down opposite him.
âIâve nothing planned.â Sophie clearly had, and whatever that was he suddenly craved the opportunity to be a part of it.
She grinned. âIn that case, can I persuade you to give me a lift? I need to go into town and then Iâm going to visit the hospital.â
âWhat for?â
âIâm going to visit the childrenâs ward. I made up my mind that I would when we were visiting Carly. I got lost on the way to the drinks machine and ended up in there.â
He chuckled. âI thought you were just taking your time, so that I could persuade Carly to behave.â
âNothing that premeditated. I phoned the administrator yesterday and he said it would be fine for me to go. I want to stop off in town to get something for them first. I canât go empty-handed.â
She didnât need to take anything, just being there would be more than enough. But he supposed a little memento of the afternoon for the kids would be nice.
âSure. You want me to borrow a car? You might arrive a bit windblown if we take the bike.â
âOh, windblown is fine.â She obviously had everything planned and was on a roll. âI like the bike.â
He liked the bike, too. Particularly with Sophie riding behind him, her arms firmly around his waist. He took the longest route he could into town, hoping that it wasnât too obvious that he was just riding around with her for kicks.
âPhew!â She climbed off the back of the bike, removing her helmet and unzipping her jacket. âI love those country lanes. There seem to be such a lot of them.â
She shot him a knowing grin, looked around and then made a beeline for the door of the large electrical store that heâd parked outside. The automatic doors swooshed open, and Drew followed in the wake of her bright enthusiasm.
Suddenly she stopped short, a frown puckering her brow. âI didnât come in here for a vacuum cleaner, did I?â She was looking at the display straight in front of her.
âI wouldnât have thought so. You didnât say what it was you wanted.â Drew looked around for a clue.
Sheâd consulted her notebook and a grin spread across her face. âYeah, I think that would be good.
